When AIS Is Required
AIS is generally mandatory for:

- Passenger vessels carrying more than 150 passengers
- Certain towing vessels
- SOLAS vessels operating internationally
Even when not required, many charter operators voluntarily install AIS to increase visibility and safety.
AIS Classes
Class A — Required for larger commercial vessels
Class B — Common on recreational and small commercial vessels
AIS also integrates with Vessel Traffic Services systems.
