174. Fire Extinguishers on Boats: Types, Requirements, and Maintenance
Not All Fire Extinguishers Are the Same
Fire onboard escalates fast. Having the right extinguisher — and knowing it works — is critical.
Types of Marine Fire Extinguishers
Most recreational boats use:
- Type B (or B-I / B-II) → for flammable liquids (fuel, oil)
- Type C → electrical fires
Many extinguishers are rated ABC, covering multiple fire types.
How Many Do You Need?
Requirements depend on boat size and enclosed spaces, but generally:
- Smaller vessels → at least one B-I
- Larger vessels → multiple units required

Check manufacturer label for details.

Instead:
- take to hazardous waste facility
- or local fire department guidance
